“Live and volunteer in Central America, in Mexico’s lively Caribbean beach town of Playa del Carmen.
You will be volunteering at a children’s centre run by Save the Children. The focus is on empowering children to know and apply their rights as well as providing a safe environment in which they can learn and play.
Responsibilities are extremely varied on this project. You will be involved in the overall running of the centre, from delivering health and safety sessions to ensuring the centre is clean and tidy. The centre is coordinated by Save the Children, whose expert staff will provide close supervision.
If you do not speak Spanish, don’t worry! This programme provides you with an excellent opportunity to learn a new language and work with children at the same time. Speak to your coordinator about arranging Spanish lessons, that will fully prepare you for life on the project. If you opt to stay more than 8 weeks, you have an option of doing an extra 80 or 120 hours of Spanish lesson, please speak to your Country Expert for more information.”
Monday to Friday
Throughout your time on the programme, you will be helping with homework, preparing posters and educational resources, tidying the centre and playing games with the children. A lot of the work focuses on making children aware of how to keep safe, from teaching them how to identify different forms of violence to making sure they know their rights. Severe weather is a very real threat in this part of Mexico, so you may also be involved in advising children of safety measures to take during a hurricane.
Accommodation will be shared with other volunteers in a house or apartment, sharing a room, bathroom, and communal areas.
If you would prefer to stay in private accommodation while on this project, this location does offer upgrades. Contact us for more information, or mention to your Country Expert who will be able to assist you.
Weekends are yours to enjoy all that the Riviera Maya has to offer. Visit Mayan ruins, including Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza, snorkel in a cenote, explore the Caribbean’s magical reefs or just take it easy on the white sand beaches of Playa del Carmen.
